SUMMARY:Summer Camp Week 1 (Ages 6-9)
DESCRIPTION:Summer Camp Week 1 at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art invites young artists to explore History\, Symbols & Storytelling through the rich cultural traditions of the Biloxi people. Campers begin the week by asking\, Who are the local native people of Biloxi? Through map activities focused on the Gulf Coast and Mississippi\, students learn about tribal history\, cultural values\, and the deep connection between people and place. Inspired by Southeastern symbolism\, each child creates a personal “Story Shield\,” designing meaningful symbols that represent their own identity. \nAs the week unfolds\, campers examine traditional Native motifs—such as suns\, animals\, rivers\, and spirals—before sculpting clay symbol tiles and hand-building coil pots that reflect river culture and pottery traditions. Using natural textures like burlap and shells\, students explore how art connects to environment and daily life. On painting day\, earth-toned palettes bring their creations to life. \nThe week concludes with storytelling and visual narrative. After reading an age-appropriate Tunica-Biloxi legend\, campers collaborate on a large story scroll mural\, celebrating the power of oral tradition and artistic expression. Through hands-on projects and thoughtful discussion\, Week 1 fosters creativity\, cultural appreciation\, and meaningful connections to history. \nPLEASE PROVIDE A PACKED LUNCH \nAGES 6-9\nDates: June 15-19 \nDownload Camp Application

SUMMARY:Summer Camp Week 2 (Ages 10-14)
DESCRIPTION:Summer Camp Week 2 at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art explores Textiles\, Beadwork & Nature Art\, highlighting traditional materials and craftsmanship of Southeastern tribes. Campers discover how Native communities resourcefully used materials from their natural environment—grasses\, fibers\, feathers\, and clay—to create both functional and decorative art. \nThe week begins with Nature Weaving\, where students use cardboard looms\, raffia\, yarn\, feathers\, and dried grasses to design woven pieces inspired by traditional techniques. On Tuesday\, campers examine images of Southeastern beadwork patterns and create patterned beaded bracelets\, learning how color and repetition tell stories and signify identity. \nMidweek\, the focus turns to Animal Symbolism\, exploring the cultural importance of deer\, birds\, turtles\, and other regional wildlife. Through canvas board paintings\, students interpret their own “animal spirit” artwork using meaningful symbols and vibrant design. Thursday introduces traditional clothing materials and craftsmanship\, culminating in a creative paper doll cultural clothing design using fabric scraps and mixed media. \nThe week concludes with a lively Biloxi Mini Art Market Day\, where campers display and “trade” their handmade crafts while learning about historic trade practices among Southeastern tribes. Week 2 celebrates creativity\, cultural understanding\, and the enduring connection between art\, nature\, and community. \nPLEASE PROVIDE A PACKED LUNCH \nAges: 10-14\nDates: 06/22-06/26\nTime: 10AM – 2PM \nDownload Camp Application

SUMMARY:Hand Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, we’ll explore the human hand as both a form and a language—something that holds\, reaches\, releases\, and connects. Together\, we’ll create expressive ceramic hand sculptures that reflect personal emotion\, memory\, or intention (or just a really nice jewelry holder!). \nYou’ll be guided through the process of building a hand from clay\, focusing on proportion\, gesture\, and surface detail. Whether you choose to create something realistic or more abstract\, this workshop encourages you to follow your instincts and let the piece become a reflection of what you’re feeling. \nAt the end\, you will get to choose the glaze color! (Cone 6 = 2 week turnaround/Cone 10 = 8 weeks turnaround) \nThis class is open to all experience levels. No prior clay experience is needed—just a willingness to create and explore. \nCome as you are\, and leave with a piece that feels lived-with and alive. \nInstructor: Marissa Hakes\nLevel: Age 16 and up \nRefunds less credit card fees are available up to 7 days before the class begins. After that period\, the fee is non-refundable. However\, you may transfer your ticket to a friend.
