DESCRIPTION:Wet Carved Concrete Workshop 3-Day Experience\nDiscover the unique art of wet carved concrete! Over three hands-on days\, you’ll learn how to create your own sculptural planter or vertical form using a simple concrete mix and specialized carving tools. No experience needed — just curiosity and a willingness to dive in! \nWet carving is done while the concrete is still soft so no power tools are required. Participants will make either a small sculpture or planter about 14in high. Tools are provided but individuals will be able to purchase a set developed by the instructor. \nElder Jones has been wet carving concrete for over thirty five years. He received national attention on HGTV and Southern Living Magazine. His work and technique is featured extensively in the two popular books by Sherri Warner Hunter. He was represented by La Mesa of Santa Fe Gallery on Canyon Road for eight years. Currently pieces are available through his studio in western North Carolina. The www.sandpudding.com website has images of planters\, sculpture\, on site constructions and public art. Also\, there are photos of people and work from previous workshops. \nDay 1 — Prep + Design (1-5 pm)\nWe’ll kick things off with introductions and a short presentation on the wet carving process — what it is\, what to expect\, and how to design for success. Vertical shapes work best\, so most participants choose a tall planter or sculptural form. \nTogether\, we’ll: \n\nMeasure and dry-mix our sand and cement (3:1 ratio)\nLoad our mix into 5-gallon buckets\nSet up our individual workstations and cylindrical forms\nPreview example works for inspiration\n\nThis gets us ready for fast action on Day 2. If someone can’t attend Day 1\, they can come early on Day 2 and catch up easily. \nFinished piece size: approx. 10″ × 12″ or 9″ × 14″\nFinal weight: ~40–50 lbs \nDay 2 — Mix\, Set\, Carve! (9am-5pm)\nThis is the big day — our most active\, creative session. \nWe’ll: \n\nMix our concrete by hand and pack it into our forms (about 1 hour)\nPause while the mix sets (3–4 hours)\nView images\, sketch ideas\, discuss carving techniques\nOptional: purchase a set of 10 custom carving tools ($25)\n\nOnce the form is ready\, we’ll remove it and carve directly into the slowly curing concrete. You’ll have continuous support and individual guidance throughout the process. Most participants complete their piece within 5 hours of carving time. \nExpect moments of challenge… followed by meditative focus and joyful discovery! \nWhen you’re done — you’re done. No clean-up\, no moving the piece. Just step back and admire your creative endeavor. \nWe recommend devoting the full day without other plans. Maximum working time is about 8 hours depending on temperature and stamina. \nDay 3 — Finishing Touches (10am-12pm)\nA relaxed final session! \nWe will: \n\nTrim and refine the base\nSign the bottom of your work\nHose and rinse to remove loose material\nBegin the curing process (water submersion or periodic soaking)\n\nThen we clean the space\, celebrate\, hug\, and snap a group photo. Campers begin the week by asking\, Who are the local native people of Biloxi? Through map activities focused on the Gulf Coast and Mississippi\, students learn about tribal history\, cultural values\, and the deep connection between people and place. Inspired by Southeastern symbolism\, each child creates a personal “Story Shield\,” designing meaningful symbols that represent their own identity. \nAs the week unfolds\, campers examine traditional Native motifs—such as suns\, animals\, rivers\, and spirals—before sculpting clay symbol tiles and hand-building coil pots that reflect river culture and pottery traditions. Using natural textures like burlap and shells\, students explore how art connects to environment and daily life. On painting day\, earth-toned palettes bring their creations to life. \nThe week concludes with storytelling and visual narrative. After reading an age-appropriate Tunica-Biloxi legend\, campers collaborate on a large story scroll mural\, celebrating the power of oral tradition and artistic expression. Campers discover how Native communities resourcefully used materials from their natural environment—grasses\, fibers\, feathers\, and clay—to create both functional and decorative art. \nThe week begins with Nature Weaving\, where students use cardboard looms\, raffia\, yarn\, feathers\, and dried grasses to design woven pieces inspired by traditional techniques. On Tuesday\, campers examine images of Southeastern beadwork patterns and create patterned beaded bracelets\, learning how color and repetition tell stories and signify identity. \nMidweek\, the focus turns to Animal Symbolism\, exploring the cultural importance of deer\, birds\, turtles\, and other regional wildlife. Through canvas board paintings\, students interpret their own “animal spirit” artwork using meaningful symbols and vibrant design. Thursday introduces traditional clothing materials and craftsmanship\, culminating in a creative paper doll cultural clothing design using fabric scraps and mixed media. \nThe week concludes with a lively Biloxi Mini Art Market Day\, where campers display and “trade” their handmade crafts while learning about historic trade practices among Southeastern tribes. Learn how a line drawing on a metal plate is turned into a printing plate that can then be printed on paper. Learn how to etch your zinc plate\, and pull a print from it on our press using traditional intaglio materials and methods under Master Printmaker\, Michael Richardson. \nThis single session workshop teaches how to ground a plate\, draw on it\, etch it\, and print it. After discussing how rhythm connects communities during ceremonies and celebrations\, campers design and decorate their own hand drums using paint and mixed materials—creating instruments that reflect personal and cultural expression. \nMidweek\, students collaborate on a large-scale Community Mural inspired by Biloxi culture. On Part 1\, campers plan imagery and themes together\, emphasizing symbols\, river life\, animals\, and shared values. Part 2 brings the mural to life with vibrant tempera paint\, reinforcing teamwork and collective creativity. \nOn Thursday\, students create Stacked Symbol Sculptures—totem-inspired storytelling pieces. While Southeastern tribes did not traditionally use Northwest-style totems\, campers explore the idea of stacked symbolic forms to represent layered stories\, values\, and identity. \nThe week concludes with a joyful Celebration Day & Art Show\, where families are invited to view the mural and student projects. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate American Heritage with Pine Needle Basketry\nIn this 3 hour class\, you’ll learn to make a beautiful and unique 3” to 5” basket with longleaf pine needles and waxed sinew.  No prior experience is necessary\, only patience and pine needles are the main ingredients for this natural and versatile basket. What better way to keep tuned to Mother Nature than to gather fragrant pine needles from her forest floor and sew them into baskets of natural beauty. DESCRIPTION:Come to our beautiful studio and enjoy the excitement of firing work in a Raku kiln! Raku is an exhilarating and unique process where pots are taken out of the kiln while red hot and put in a combustible material to make colorful and iridescent effects. Students must wear closed toe shoes and clothes you aren’t afraid to get dirty!
