Crossing the Line takes a look at the spectrum of artwork that Michael Richardson has been working on for the last five years. These pieces are a combination of intaglio prints that he is known for as well as more experimental works using Southern Indian fabric drawing form called Kalamkari. Over the course of this timeframe, Richardson has embraced more diverse practices into his printmaking career in a new synthesis that combines these other forms. The show’s title, Crossing the Line, references graphic impulses made with mark-making as well as the former separation of his practice, spanning shadow puppetry and printmaking. With this newfound cross-fertilization, Richardson is now embracing everything he has made in his career and reinterpreting these pieces in new ways. This includes his unfinished kalamkari pieces whose production was interrupted due to the COVID-19 crisis and mandatory evacuation from India.
