Mud Daubers Summer Art Camp:

We are excited to welcome your child to our Biloxi (Tunica-Biloxi) Art Camp!

During camp, students will explore the history, art, and cultural traditions of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana through hands-on creative projects. Campers will learn about Southeastern Woodlands Native cultures while creating pottery, beadwork, woven art, storytelling scrolls, and a collaborative community mural.

Our goals are to:
• Celebrate Native cultures as living and vibrant communities
• Teach students about symbolism, storytelling, and craftsmanship
• Encourage creativity, respect, and cultural awareness

All lessons are designed to be age-appropriate and culturally respectful. We focus on education, art techniques, and appreciation — not reenactment of sacred ceremonies or religious practices.

Throughout camp, students will:
• Learn about the geography and history of the Biloxi people
• Explore traditional materials and artistic styles
• Create meaningful personal artwork
• Participate in collaborative and community-building activities

On the final day of camp, families are invited to attend our Art Celebration Showcase where campers will display their artwork.

If you have any questions or would like to share relevant cultural knowledge or resources, please feel free to reach out.

We look forward to a creative and meaningful experience together!

About Summer Camp:

Mud Daubers Summer Art Camp is a 4 hour program from 10 am – 2 pm held Monday through Friday; the week ends on Friday with an art reception featuring camper’s artwork.  Camp is limited to twenty students per week in order to provide one-on-one art instruction.  Sessions are designed to accommodate campers within a specific age range and include projects that meet their artistic skill level.  Activities include both indoor and outdoor playtime as well as tours of the museum.  Please ensure your child wears close-toed shoes and comfortable clothing in which they can play, move, and paint.  Campers must also pack a lunch and snack every day to eat during supervised breaks.

Summer Art Camp at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art offers a one week immersive cultural arts experience for children ages 6–14, inspired by the history and traditions of the Biloxi and Southeastern tribes.

Week 1: History, Symbols & Storytelling (Ages 6-10) introduces campers to the Biloxi people through map activities, discussions of tribal history, and exploration of cultural values. Young artists create personal “Story Shields,” clay symbol tiles, and hand-built coil pots inspired by river culture. The week concludes with a collaborative story scroll mural following an age-appropriate Tunica-Biloxi legend, celebrating oral tradition and visual storytelling.

Week 2: Textiles, Beadwork & Nature Art (Ages 10-14) focuses on traditional materials and craftsmanship. Campers explore natural resource use through nature weaving, design patterned beaded bracelets, and create animal symbolism paintings featuring deer, birds, and turtles. A paper doll cultural clothing project highlights historical materials, and the week ends with a lively Mini Art Market Day where students “trade” their handmade crafts while learning about Southeastern trade traditions.

Week 3: Music, Community & Large-Scale Art (Ages 10-14) emphasizes rhythm, collaboration, and celebration. Campers create hand drums, paint a large community mural inspired by Biloxi culture, and construct stacked symbol sculptures that tell layered stories. The program culminates in a family art show and celebration honoring creativity and community.
