Gina Phillips | Bright, Dark, Dim, and Rogue
IP Gallery
Exhibition Statement:
This exhibition takes its title from comet classifications, evoking cycles of visibility, disappearance, and return that shape Gina Phillips’s practice. Spanning approximately fifteen years, the exhibition resists chronology and instead unfolds as an accumulation of layers, material, narrative, and temporal, where forms emerge, erode, and reappear in altered states.
Working from an initial underpainting on muslin, Phillips builds each surface with reclaimed fabric, thread, and cording, drawing with a longarm quilting machine through a process of revision and recovery. Traces of earlier decisions remain embedded, emphasizing persistence rather than erasure. Salvaged materials carry prior histories, situating each work within a continuum of use and transformation.
Recurring motifs, including subterranean landscapes, bodily fragments, and atmospheric forms, reflect an ongoing inquiry into what lies above and below, seen and unseen. Across the exhibition, nothing is fixed. Forms circulate through cycles of decay, regeneration, and return, suggesting a world in constant flux.
Exhibition Dates: March 26, 2026 through July 18, 2026
