The Odyssey of Charles Hutson explores the artistic legacy of Charles W. Hutson (1830-1936), whose extraordinary life spanned nearly a century of American history. A teacher, author, Civil War veteran, and lifelong lover of nature, Hutson spent decades traveling throughout the South before settling in New Orleans. Along the way, he developed a deep appreciation for the landscapes, waterways, forests, and coastal environments that would later become the subjects of his paintings.

Although he did not begin painting seriously until later in life, Hutson brought to his work a keen eye, a thoughtful spirit, and a lifetime of observation. His paintings reflect both the places he called home and the joy he found in exploring the natural world with family and friends. This exhibition celebrates the journey of a self-taught artist whose enduring curiosity, creativity, and love of nature continued well into his nineties.
