Kathy Tosch | Spiritual Observations from Isolation
Welcome Center Community Gallery
April 8 – June 28, 2025
Artist Statement
This show reflects the isolation that can occur in our lives. This may not necessarily be a bad thing, as alone time gives us an opportunity to reflect on what is happening inside ourselves and around us, as well as our interactions with others.
In each painting, the female gaze is contemplative. She is surrounded by fish or birds, and a fishbowl or birdcage may be included. It is up to the viewer to decide: What is she thinking? What are the birds or fish communicating to her? Are they giving advice or offering protection?
The fish and birds reflect our relationships with those around us and can symbolize many things. Birds can represent transformation, transcendence, freedom, wisdom, or new opportunities. Different birds have special meanings as well. Parrots remind us to show our true colors and embrace authenticity. A birdcage can symbolize control or freedom from isolation.
Fish can signify stability, tranquility, or balance. As metaphors for deeper awareness, they are often linked to happiness, independence, and steadfast movement. A fishbowl may represent confinement or a life that is always on display.
I hope that by viewing this show, you connect with the women in these paintings and take a
moment to reflect on what isolation and connection to the outside world mean to you.
