Carolyn Whitescarver
Saints and Sinners
Community Art Gallery
Second Floor of City of Biloxi Center for Ceramics
When I began working on this show about a year ago, my intention was simply to pay homage to the wealth of creative talent on the Gulf Coast by painting portraits of local artists and musicians. As the portraits came to life on the canvas, each took on a personality of its own. Some looked back at me with devilish grins. Others looked angelic or long-suffering. Hence the title of the show, Saints and Sinners. As you view the portraits, you can decide which are “saints” and which are “sinners.”
As for me, I subscribe to this quote by Nelson Mandela:
“I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying.”
