“I was raised in Yokohama, Japan. I came to America to start my university life. During my sophomore year, I took a pottery class as one of my electives. I was hooked, and the following semester I changed my major to Art. I went on to receive my B.F.A. and M.F.A. in pottery. I grew up in my grandmother’s house surrounded by items made by Japanese artisans. Her salt was kept in a Bizen jar. We ate out of porcelain rice bowls. That left a huge impact on me, and I learned to really appreciate living with handmade everyday items. I enjoy making pottery and enjoy the reactions that I get from my customers. That is like living in the good feeling I had in my grandmother’s house all over again.”
