The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art is offering a Teen Art Docent Program for three teens from the East Biloxi community. This is a 7-week educational initiative that will take place, June 1st through July 30th. The program will have 2 week-long breaks.
The three days that the docents will meet at the museum are Wednesday, Thursdays, and Saturday’s from 10 AM – 2 PM.
The docents will have the opportunity to give tours, demonstrate art projects to the local youth, do impactful community outreach, and work with each member of our staff to have a comprehensive understanding of what goes on in an art museum. Throughout the duration of this program the docents will develop the necessary skills to educate our guests on art and elaborate on the specific art genres that we have in our galleries.
Through this program the docents selected will have the opportunity to do several tasks which includes, gallery tours, gallery sitting, adding their input into the print materials and visitor surveys for the museum, and shadowing our various staff members in their respective departments to learn what each aspect of running an art museum looks like. Throughout the week the teens will be scheduled on different days and given selected tasks, so they are being used in different aspects of the programming.
For this summer program the docents will be receiving a $1000 stipend for the work they are doing. They’ll be working 12 hours over the span of the three days they are here at the museum each week.
