“Dusti Bonge, Art and Life: Biloxi, New Orleans, New York”
Dusti Bongé’s experiences in Biloxi, Mississippi; New Orleans, Louisiana; and New York, New York influenced the art of Dusti Bongé (Eunice Lyle Swetman). Born in Biloxi in 1903, she was raised as the daughter of a prominent local banker and died there in 1993. After graduating Blue Mountain College in 1922, she went on to Chicago, to become an actress, and then moved to New York, where she performed on the stage and in silent movies before she married artist Archie Bongé. Following Archie’s death in 1936, Dusti dedicated herself to working as an artist. She exhibited her work in Biloxi and New Orleans, then in New York in 1939. Dusti exhibited her work in a series of one person shows at Betty Parsons Gallery in New York from 1956 to 1975, thus achieving national recognition.
