Andrea Kostyal

Dreamlike Street Scenes

Community Art Gallery
Second Floor of City of Biloxi Center for Ceramics

Andrea Kostyal’s dreamlike paintings are inspired by urban landscapes and nature that reflect experiences from her childhood growing up in Europe.

“I have been creating art since early childhood. Being a shy child, music, drawing, painting, and crafts were important ways to express myself.”

She majored in Textiles at the Secondary School of Arts in Pécs, Hungary and later studied art and textiles in an artistically and culturally rich city in Hungary. Beautiful historic buildings and architectural masterpieces inspired her work. Her memories of dynamic city life and the urban streets’ atmosphere suggests that her paintings explore harmony between the natural environment and man-made structures.

Of her artwork she says:

“I enjoy careful planning of my detailed transferred photographs of street views as viewpoints in my paintings.  They contain constructed forms between grids. These grids simultaneously connect shapes and forms along horizontal and vertical lines, like woven tapestry, creating rhythms, a sense of depth and visual spacing between detailed or compendious forms. Playful bubbles permeate the whole painting in poetic movement on the canvas, reflecting my feelings and moods.”

In 2001 she moved to the United States. This major shift in her life, and curiosity towards the new surroundings led her to find interest in different techniques. She has lived in Hattiesburg, Mississippi since 2008.
