Among George Ohr’s many popular creations, the puzzle mug is one of the most engaging. Based on centuries-old drinking puzzles, these functional vessels contain hidden channels and openings that make each of them unique. To successfully navigate drinking from the cup, the drinker must discover the correct combination of holes to cover while sipping from a concealed channel.

Made for the burgeoning tourist trade, these mugs are a combination of technical skill, humor, and clay virtuosity. They immediately became a popular tourist memento alongside his utilitarian plaques, inkwells, and decorative items.

These pieces from the museum’s permanent collection were part of the personal collection of James Carpenter, who was responsible for the rediscovery of George Ohr in the early 1970s. While typical of the many puzzle mugs Ohr created over the years, several of these works have special surface decorations or twists and flutes that are more typical of his art pottery.

They were donated to the museum in honor of James and Miriam Carpenter.
